Importing and Exporting Project Settings

Project settings can be copied from one project to another using the Project Settings Import or Export Wizard. This can save significant time if you’d like to use the same settings for multiple projects.

Project objects can be copied from another Doc-To-Help project, or from an XML file. Following are the objects that are available for import/export:

  • Keywords
  • Groups
  • Variables
  • Attributes
  • Windows
  • Styles
  • Scripts
  • Templates
  • Style Sheets
  • Help Targets
  • Project Properties

  1. Choose File > Doc-To-Help > Common Tasks > Import Project Settings. The Project Settings Import Wizard opens.

  2. Choose to import from an XML file or an existing Doc-To-Help project.
  3. Click Next.

  4. Click , browse to the XML file or Doc-To-Help project file (.d2h) location, select it, and click Open.

  5. Click Next.

  6. Select the project objects you’d like to import. By default, all are selected.

  7. (Optional) If you’d like to overwrite the existing settings in the current project (rather than add to them), select Overwrite objects existing in the current project.

  8. Click the Import button. Any issues with the import will be displayed.

  1. Choose File > Doc-To-Help > Common Tasks > Export Project Settings. The Project Settings Export Wizard opens.

  2. Choose to export from an XML file or an existing Doc-To-Help project.
  3. Click Next.

  4. Click , browse to the XML file or Doc-To-Help project file (.d2h) location, select it, and click Open.

  5. Click Next.

  6. Select the project objects you’d like to export. By default, all are selected.

  7. (Optional) If you’d like to overwrite the existing settings in the current project (rather than add to them), select Overwrite objects existing in the current project.

  8. Click the Export button. Any issues with the export will be displayed.

To keep your Doc-To-Help project settings in an XML file that you can modify and use in any project, you must first export your project settings to XML using the Project Settings Export Wizard. Any changes you make manually to the XML file must conform to the XML schema Doc-To-Help uses to validate the file. This schema file is named "c1d2h.xsd" and is located by default in the C:\Program Files (x86)\MadCap Software\MadCap DocToHelp 6\ directory. Storing project settings in an XML file makes it possible to automatically modify Doc-To-Help projects.
