Setting Machine Translation Options

Before you can use machine translation (MT) to translate a project or provide suggestions for segments, you must provide authentication credentials for the MT provider(s) you want to use. You can do this from Lingo's Options dialog.

How to Set Machine Translation Options

  1. Select File > Options.
  2. Click the Machine Translation tab.
  3. From the Select Machine Translation Provider drop-down, select an MT service. In the Settings area, enter your authentication credentials. Each provider requires different credentials.

    • Google Cloud Translation Enter your API Key.
    • Microsoft Translator Enter your API Key.

(Optional) In the Category field, you can also provide a category that you have previously set up in your Microsoft MT account.

    • MyMemory Enter your Key.
    • DeepL Enter your Authentication Key.

Note If you are using DeepL, please refer to that provider's documentation to ensure your version of DeepL is compatible with a computer-assisted translation (CAT) tool. Otherwise, your key will not work in Lingo.

For information about MT provider usage and credentials, please visit each provider's website.

  4. (Optional) Click Test Connection to verify that your credentials are correct.
  5. (Optional) If you want to save previously used MT results in an XLIFF file, select Cache MT results as XLIFF alternates. This prevents the MT from looking for new translations for previously translated segments. If the source segment is modified, the MT will look for a new translation for the updated segment. If this option is disabled, the MT will look for new translations whenever you click a target segment or translate the project with the MT.

  6. (Optional) If you want MT suggestions to show up when you are doing a concordance search, select Use MT in concordance searching. In the Concordance Search window pane, you can tell whether a suggestion comes from translation memory (TM) or MT by hovering over a segment. See Concordance.

  7. Click OK.

Note By default, MT suggestions are applied in the current target language, but you can apply them in all target languages. You can change your language settings in the Project Properties dialog. See Project Properties Dialog.

If you choose to pre-translate your project during project creation, MT suggestions are applied to the whole project across all languages, regardless of the setting in the Project Properties dialog.
