Menus

Lingo's user interface includes a menu bar at the top of the program window, containing several menu options. One of the most unique menu items is the Resources menu, which can be used to perform various translation memory (TM) tasks, such as installing/selecting a TM database and importing/exporting TMX files.

file menu

New Project	Opens the Start New Project Wizard, which you can use to create a new project. See Creating New Projects.
Update Project	Opens a dialog that lets you select a newer version of the source project or file(s) that are being translated. The Lingo project is then updated with those changes. See Updating Projects.
Open	The Open dialog displays. The Lingo project file extension (.liprj) appears in the File Type field.
Project Properties	Opens the Project Editor, which displays basic information about the project (e.g., project path, source language, target language).
Compute Statistics	Generates a statistical report for your Lingo project. It displays the results in an HTML file and lets you see information about your translation work. This is a way to provide for your client an estimate of the amount of translation work that still needs to be done. See Computing Statistics.
Close	Closes the active file.
Close Project	Closes the current project, but the application itself does not close.
Save	Saves changes to the active file.
Save All	Saves changes to all of the open files.
Export	Opens the Export Finished Translation dialog, which lets you create a copy of your translated project or file to the relevant application, file type, or location. The option shown depends on the origin of the information that you are translating in Lingo (e.g., Flare project, Microsoft Word document). This enables the author to open the translated project or file and create output for it. See Exporting Translated Projects.
Review	Opens the Save for Review dialog, which lets you export selected files as a MadCap Contributor review archive file. You can then email the file to individuals so that they can review the translations. See Sending Translated Content for Review. You can also select the following from the submenu: Save File(s) for Review You can save files to send to a third-party reviewer for comments and revisions. Import Review Package After you receive edits from a third-party reviewer, you can import the reviewed files into your Lingo project. After that, you can view and accept/reject the changes made by the reviewer.
Project QA	Opens a dialog that lets you select the quality assurance reports you want to run on your project. It displays the results in an HTML file and lets you see information about your translation work. This is a way to find errors in your project before finalizing the translation. See Running Quality Assurance Reports.
Backups	You can choose the following backup options. Send Copy to the Backups Folder Creates a temporary copy of the file that is open and active in the interface. The file is placed in the Backups window pane. See Backing Up Files. Clear the Backups Folder Removes all temporary backup files from the Backups window pane. See Clearing the Backups Folder. Backups Opens the Backups Folder window pane, where you can view your backup files. example example You might use this feature, for example, if you want to make some changes to a file but are not certain if you will want to keep them when you are finished. Therefore, you can make a backup of the file in question. When you are finished making your changes, you might decide that you prefer the file the way it was. If so, you can quickly roll back to the backup file, which overwrites the changes that you made.
Send To	Opens a submenu, which lets you open the active file in another application, attach it to an email, or open the Windows folder where it is stored.
Recent Files	Displays a list of recently opened files. You can select one from the list to open it. You can also select Manage Recent Files. This opens the Recent Files dialog, which lets you remove files from the list of recently opened files. This allows you to keep the list shorter and more manageable. When you use this feature, the file is merely removed from the list, but the actual file is not deleted. See Recent Files Dialog.
Recent Projects	Displays a list of recently opened projects. You can select one from the list to open it. You can also select Manage Recent Projects. This opens the Recent Projects dialog, which lets you remove projects from the list of recently opened projects. This allows you to keep the list shorter and more manageable. When you use this feature, the project is merely removed from the list, but the actual project is not deleted. See Recent Projects Dialog.
Exit	Closes the application.

edit menu

Undo	Lets you reverse the most recent action in a file. The undo and redo functions are enhanced in the following ways. Unlimited You can undo or redo an unlimited number of times, back to the last time you opened the file, even after you have saved the document. Multiple Buffers Each document in the interface has its own Undo/Redo buffer. This means that you can undo actions in one document and then switch to another document and undo actions specific to that file. User-friendly Interface You can use the drop-down arrow under the button to select multiple steps to undo or redo at once, even resizing the drop-down box as necessary.
Redo	Lets you repeat the most recent action that you reversed in a file.
Cut	Cuts the selection and sends it to the clipboard.
Copy	Copies the selection and sends it to the clipboard.
Paste	Pastes the selection from the clipboard to the place where the cursor is inserted.
Delete	Deletes the selection.
Select All	Selects all content in the file.
Find and Replace	Opens a submenu, which lets you choose from the following options: Quick Find Opens the Quick Find widget in the upper-right corner of the open document. This lets you search for text in that document. See Using the Quick Find and Replace Widgets. Quick Replace Opens the Quick Replace widget in the upper-right corner of the open document. This is the same as the Quick Find widget, except that it opens with the replace fields already in view. It lets you search for and replace text in that document. See Using the Quick Find and Replace Widgets. Find and Replace in Files Opens the Find and Replace in Files window pane, which lets you search for and replace text in multiple documents. See Using the Find and Replace in Files Feature. Find Results 1 Opens the Find Results 1 window pane, which is used to display results from a search in the Find in and Replace in Files window pane. Find Results 2 Opens the Find Results 2 window pane, which is used to display results from a search in the Find in and Replace in Files window pane.
Properties	Opens the Properties dialog for the selected item.
Character	Opens a submenu that lets you insert special characters or symbols into the eitor. See Inserting Characters and Symbols. Insert Quick Character Inserts the quick character. You can also accomplish this by clicking the by pressing F11 on your keyboard. Non-breaking Space Inserts a non-breaking space. This is a special space character that prevents an automatic line break (line wrap) at its position. Also known as a hard space or fixed space, it can be used to create multiple spaces in a row in systems like HTML that reduce sequences of normal spaces to a single space. You can also insert a non-breaking space by pressing SHIFT+SPACE on your keyboard. Non-breaking Hyphen Inserts a non-breaking hyphen. You can also insert a non-breaking hyphen by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+- on your keyboard. Favorites Displays and lets you select any of the characters and symbols from your favorites list. Recently Used Displays and lets you select any of your most recently used characters and symbols. More characters Opens the new Character dialog. See Character Dialog.

translate menu

Confirm	Accepts the current segment, inserts that translation into the translation memory, and then moves the focus of the editor to the next untranslated segment. See Translating Files.
Confirm and Move Next	Accepts the current segment, inserts that translation into the translation memory, and then moves the focus of the editor to the next translated or untranslated segment.
Confirm and Go Back	Accepts the current segment, inserts that translation into the translation memory, and then moves the focus of the editor to the previous translated or untranslated segment.
Add New Term…	Lets you add a term in the segment to a termbase. See Adding Concepts and Terms to Termbases and Editing Termbases.
Quick Add Terms…	Uploads several new terms to the termbase.
Copy Source to Target	Replaces the target segment with the source segment contents.
Add Next Tag	Copies each tag in order from the source to the target cell.
Add Next Number	Adds each number in order from the source to the target cell.
Split Segment	Breaks the segment at the point where the cursor is placed, so that the one segment becomes two.
Join Segments	Merges the selected segments into a single segment.
Translate project with TM	Scans your translation memory to find 100% or 101% matches for untranslated segments and applies those translations accordingly. See Applying TM Suggestions to Segments.
Upload Selected	Uploads the selected segment to translation memory so that you can take advantage of that translation in the future.
Machine Translate Project	Runs machine translation on the entire project. See About Machine Translation.
Bundle	Creates a translation bundle (based on files you have selected in the File List window pane) to send to translators. See Preparing Translation Bundles and About Bundles.
Merge Completed Bundle	Merges a translation bundle that you have received from translators with your original project. See Merging Completed Bundles and About Bundles.
MadTranslations	Opens a website with information about MadTranslations. This is MadCap Software's translation service, which can help with your document translation needs.

Resources menu

Edit TM	Lets you open a TM in the Translation Memory Editor, which lets you modify the contents of your TM database. See Editing the Translation Memory Database.
Create TM	Lets you create a new local or server TM database. See Creating a Translation Memory Database.
Choose TM	Opens the Manage Translation Memory dialog, which lets you select one or more TM databases to be associated with the project. See Choosing a Translation Memory Database.
Edit Termbase	Opens the Termbase Editor, where you can add or change definitions in the termbase. See Editing Termbases.
Create Termbase	Lets you create a new local or server termbase.See Adding Termbases.
Choose Termbase	Opens the Manage Termbases dialog, which lets you work with termbases that you have added. For more details, see Manage Termbases Dialog.
Choose MT	Opens the Machine Translation Providers dialog, which lets you select a machine translation provider and enter applicable machine translation credentials.See Choosing a Machine Translation Provider.

view menu

Toolbars	Opens a submenu, which lets you select a toolbar to open or close: Translate Opens or closes the Translate toolbar. The Translate toolbar lets you perform various tasks directly related to the process of translating files. In order to see this toolbar, you can select View>Toolbars>Translate. Standard Opens or closes the Standard toolbar. Tools in the Standard toolbar let you perform basic functions, such as Save, Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo, and Redo. To see this toolbar you can select View>Toolbars>Standard.
File List	Opens the File List window pane, which lets you view and open files in the project so that you can translate the content. See Viewing Files Requiring Translation.
Termbase	Opens the Termbase window pane, which lets you create and work with termbases. See About Termbases.
Concordance Search	Opens the Concordance Search window pane, which lets you perform advanced searches for content in the project. See About the Concordance.
Toggle Live Preview On/Off	Toggles between Translation mode and Live Preview mode if you have a certain type of file (e.g., Word document; PowerPoint file; Flare topic, snippet, master page) open in the Translation Editor.
Start Page	Opens the Start Page, which is a handy window pane that displays when you first launch Lingo and remains open unless you close it. This window pane consists of links to high-level tasks and information. See Start Page.
Messages	Opens the Messages window pane, which displays important information as you work. For example, if a necessary file is missing, this window pane lets you know. See Messages Window Pane.
Backups	Opens the Backups window pane so that you can see the files for which you have created backups and restore (roll back) any of those files if necessary. See About Backups.
Info Bar	Hides or shows special information pertaining to the editor or window pane.
Status Bar	Opens or closes the status bar at the bottom of the program window.

tools menu

Spell Check While Typing	Activates a feature that lets you check your spelling as you type in your topics. Questionable words are underlined with a jagged red line. You can take action with the word by right-clicking on it. See Spell Checking While Typing.
Ignored Words	Opens the Ignored Words dialog, which lets you create a list of words to be ignored when using the spell checking feature in the application.
Segmentation Rules	Opens the segmentation rules dialog, which lets you create rules to automatically split segments or keep them together. See About Segmentation Rules.
File Filters	Opens the file filters dialog, where you can add, edit, import, and export file filters for Word, XML, and text files. This allows you to specify which parts of a file are imported for translation or how the file will appear when it is imported.
MadCap Align	Opens the MadCap Align utility, which lets you create alignment projects. For more details, see About Alignment.
Options	Opens the Options dialog, which lets you set various options. For more details, see Options Dialog.

window menu

Close All Documents	Closes all files that you have opened in the workspace.
Close All Documents Except This One	Closes all files that you have opened in the workspace, with the exception of the document that is currently active.
Dock	If you select the Dock option when a window pane is active, the Drag Pane area is shown or hidden in the window pane accordingly. The Drag Pane area lets you move the window pane and dock it elsewhere in the program window.
Auto Hide	"Pins" the active window pane or editor to the side of the interface so that you have more room for your workspace. You can show the window pane by hovering over the thin bar on the side of the interface. If you select the pin button at the top-right of the window pane, the window pane returns to its previous state (no longer pinned to the side of the interface).
Float	Converts the active window pane or editor to a floating window, which means it is no longer attached to the interface. This is a good option to use if you want to work on two topics side-by-side. If you do not want a window pane or editor to be floating anymore, you can right-click in the title bar and select Dock.
Layouts	Opens a submenu, which lets you select options for creating and selecting layouts. A layout is a particular configuration of the workspace. Auto-Save Window Layout Automatically saves the layout of the workspace when you exit Lingo. The next time you launch Lingo, that same layout will be displayed. Save Window Layout (Default) If you are working in a particular layout and have opened different interface elements or moved interface elements around, you can select this option to save the changes to the layout. Save Window Layout As Opens the Rename Window Layout dialog, which lets you save the current interface configuration as a layout. Reload Window Layout If you are working in a particular layout and have opened different interface elements or moved interface elements around, you can select this option to return to the saved configuration of the layout. Reset Window Layout Returns the current configuration of the interface to the factory layout settings (the original layout when you first installed and launched Lingo). Layouts Opens the Manage Window Layouts dialog, which lets you select or delete an existing layout. Select Layout Opens a submenu that lists the layouts. Select a layout to display it in the interface.
Windows…	Opens the Manage Windows dialog, which lists the files that are currently open and lets you activate (i.e., switch to), save, or close a particular file.

help menu

Contents	Opens the Help TOC window pane, which lets you locate and access topics in Lingo's online Help.
Index	Opens the Help Index window pane, which lets you search for information using the index in Lingo's online Help.
Search	Opens the Help Search window pane, which lets you search for information in Lingo's online Help.
Favorites	Opens the Help Favorites window pane, which lets you quickly access your favorite Lingo Help topics.
Glossary	Opens the Help Glossary window pane, which lets you view glossary terms and definitions in Lingo's online Help.
Help Topic	Opens the Help topic related to the active element in the Lingo interface.
New Help Topic Window	Opens a new instance of a Help topic in another window.
Dynamic Help	Opens the Dynamic Help window pane, which automatically displays the Help topic related to the active element in the interface.
Locate in TOC	Lets you manually synchronize the current Help topic with the Help TOC. In other words, the TOC book containing that topic also opens to show you where the topic resides in the TOC hierarchy.
Auto-Sync TOC	Automatically synchronizes the current Help topic with the Help TOC. In other words, when a particular Help topic is displayed, the TOC book containing that topic also opens to show you where the topic resides in the TOC hierarchy.
Index Results	Opens the Index Results window pane, which displays links to related topics after you perform a search in the Help index.
Help Community	Opens the MadCap Forums website, where you can obtain additional information about Lingo and communicate with other Lingo users.
PDF Guides	Opens a Help topic that lets you access one of the printed guides related to Lingo. See PDF Guides.
Video Tutorials	Opens a website containing videos about Lingo.
Activate Product	Opens the Activate Product Wizard, allowing you to activate the product.
Deactivate Product	Deactivates the currently used license for the machine running Lingo.
Register Product	Lets you register your version of Lingo if you have not done so already. This option is enabled only if you are using a trial version of the software.
Check for Updates	Opens the New Updates Available dialog, which lets you download Lingo updates from MadCap Software.
Report a Bug	Opens your default Internet browser to the MadCap Software bug submission web page, where you can report the bug.
About	Displays a popup that shows information about the current version of Lingo. Click the popup to make it disappear.
